In last week’s class we watched the ‘1984’ ad campaign that was against presidential Hillary Clinton. In an article posted on the Fox News website http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,260902,00.html stated that the creator of the advertisement had previously worked and lived with Obama’s Press Secretary last year. However they were working on a different campaign and not for Obama.
The advertisement was originally posted on the website anonymously and then Phillip de Vellis, the creator, admitted to The Huffington Post that he was responsible for creating the ad. Obama’s representatives have stated they had no knowledge of the creation of this advertisement. However, many people are skeptical now that new information has surfaced stating that de Vellis has ties to Obama’s current press secretary.
In this age of technology, virtually anyone has the ability to show negative advertisements or short films on the presidential candidates. YouTube makes it possible for these types of advertisements to air to a large group of potential voters. Since the candidates are trying to reach a younger audience and YouTube is used by younger viewers, do you think these types of advertisements can hurt the candidates?
With the ability to post anonymously on YouTube, virtually anyone can make negative advertisements about presidential candidates. Do you think that these advertisements will be appearing more frequently as the election gets closer? Do you think the candidates should or can try to control these types of negative campaigns on YouTube? What do you think the future will hold for such a technology driven campaign? Now that the elections are using myspace and YouTube do you think they will really reach the younger audiences?

Technology drives our everyday lives and I think using technology to reach a younger audience is a good thing butcandidates have to be very careful how they use it. Just like people can be turned off by negative campaign ads on television they can be turned off on the web.
I think for the candidates sake and the openness of the Internet, you should not be able to post campaign ads or any ad for that matter annoymously. If you want to play with fire then be prepared to get burned. If you have the balls to post it then stand up and defend the work that you have done.
As for Obama and his crew, he might have himself in a bit of a predicament. All we can do is take him for his word of not having prior knowledge about the add until more proof arises. If he did have knowledge and the public/media finds out then his campaign is in some trouble.
I agree that technology is a driving force throughout our day, and think that using the internet, and particularly YouTube is a great resource. Any type of negative advertising, via internet, television or radio has the potential to hurt or help the candidates--so why not use a medium to at least attract a different crowd?
I don't think that negative advertisements will appear any more or any less than they have in past elections--slandering has been going on for decades whether it's been published in print or on the internet. Candidates do have some control over what's being posted on the internet anonymously, at the bottom of advertisements it typically says "endorsed by..." so if candidates become too paranoid about slander, they can make a statement telling audiences to look to see who's endorsing these advertisements.
Less people are reading newspapers, so reaching to other technological mediums is definitely a good idea. I believe it will reach a younger audience, I'm just not sure if it will actually motivate the young population to actually get up and vote.
I feel that as the election gets closer, more negative advertisements will be posted about the candidates, especially if they can be posted anonymously. I think that candidates should try to control these types of negative advertisements from appearing on YouTube. I personally hate negative advertisements because I feel that bashing an opposing candidate says nothing positive about the other candidate. Put simply, it’s bad sportsmanship.
Since this is a very technology driven campaign, there will be more bashing of candidates because there are more mediums to do so anonymously (YouTube, blogs). I don’t think you should be able to post anonymously because then anyone can post negative ads to express their political views and hurt the candidates.
I do feel that using mediums such as Myspace and YouTube will help to reach a younger audience. However, I feel that having Myspace and Facebook profiles for candidates is a little juvenile. Also, I personally think it’s kind of creepy to see presidential candidates with Facebook profiles. I think YouTube is good because it allows you to catch up on certain television events that people might’ve missed on the candidates.
I feel bad for Obama and his representatives because if they really had no knowledge of the ad, it will be hard to prove especially after so much speculation.
I agree that posting negative ads about other candidates is bad sportsmanship. If all you have to say to defend yourself is to bash others and not be able to use your knowledge and skills to show why you're the best candidate, then I think you're wasting your time.
I like that I can search things on YouTube that I've missed on TV. It's nice to be able to watch a TV appearance or commercial as many times as I want. I don't think it's fair to post things on YouTube anonymously if it's negative, but there's always going to be that negative person and the candidates should expect that. I think the younger audience that uses YouTube is highly impressionable to these ads but if they weren't interested in a candidate they wouldn't be searching him or her in the first place. I'm sure they would also be using other sources (more reliable) if they were following the campaign.
I also think it's dumb for the candidates to use facebook and myspace. I just don't feel it's appropriate to use. A way to reach out to the younger crowd is to discuss issues that appeal to us and that we're concerned about, not try to act in your 20s and request our friendship on facebook.
I absolutely believe that anonymous advertisements on YouTube can hurt candidates because of the amount of younger viewers it reaches. Unfortunately, it doesn't matter all the time if a message comes from a credible source, and if the message is a memorable one, people might think about it when they are casting their vote.
I personally think it's fairly sketchy how anyone can post anonymously on YouTube, and I agree with a previous statement-you have to be able to take the heat yourself. Because of the anonyminity of posting a video, and how early these negative campaigns videos have sprung up on YouTube, I believe that there will be many more-why not? YouTube reaches hundreds of thousands of homes daily, and even if the message is made up, it is still being delivered and making someone possibly think differently than they did previously.
Lastly, using YouTube and Myspace are great tools to attract younger constituents, and I believe that it will help involve more younger people in the next election to not be as apathetic.
The internet allows virtually anyone who is savy with a few programs to create whatever they want. Personally, I feel that this ad spin-off of Apple's 1984, was not created by someone in Obama's camp. The ad itself was simply a bit obscure and the multi-colored "O" (a parody of Apple's logo) made the ad seem too jovial to be a true politcal advertisement. Of course since anyone can post annonymously, the ability to differentiate between what is "official" and what isn't is very hard. This could allow candidates to say things that they normally couldn't through the anonimity of the internet. Again though, not being able to tell who is really saying what can be dangerous...even if (for example) Obama's camp says that only official internet ads should be taken seriously, who's to say they haven't had a hand in posting annonymous ads as well?
Good words.
