Donald Trump held an interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer, on Friday and shared his views on politics. He called President Bush the "worst president in the history of the United States," Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld a "disaster" and continued to attack Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Vice President Dick Cheney (http://www.cnn.com/POLITICS/blogs/politicalticker/2007/03/trump-has-harsh-words-for-bush.html).
Trump continued to give his opinion that America should pull out of Iraq, that the country has made a mistake by going into Iraq, quoting: "one of the great catastrophes of all time." (check out the video of the interview).
Trump made comments in support of the current candidates running, such as calling Obama a "star" and Hillary "very talented." When asked if he would consider running for the presidency himself, Trump said that although he is not interested, it would "certainly be fun."
With all our recent blogs of Hollywood's involvement with politics, it's not a surprise that CNN would host an interview about the election and the war with Donald Trump. However, it goes back to the question of whether or not celebrities hold too much power and influence in the world of politics. Trump got tons of coverage on his interview and his opinions about Iraq, especially with his line that he would "fire Bush," over the Iraq invasion. More people know about The Apprentice and Donald Trump than they do political policies; with that in mind do you think that CNN should have celebrity guests speak on politics, or keep it to the politicians? How much credibility does a famous business tycoon have critiquing the Bush administration, especially when he's quoted as saying " I don't know what's going on. I just know they got us into a mess..." and then saying the presidency would sure be "fun and interesting." After all, celebrity opinions have a heavy weight on American minds, do you think it's fair Trump can call President Bush the worst president on national television? Finally, what do you think of Trump's interview making it in headline news on CNN, does America rely too heavily on celebrity trends?

I don't think this particular article is very harmful because Trump wasn't framed as being any kind of expert. His comments aren't insightful or offering any information that might sway the public opinion. And when Trump says things like being the President would "certainly be fun," I think it becomes clear he's no political aficionado. And he comments on presidential candiates from both parties, without endorsing any of them specifically.
It's just kind of interesting to know what Trump thinks- it's CNN's version of celebrity gossip. Is what Donald Trump thinks really important? It's at least not any more important than what the general public thinks, and CNN conducts public opinion polls. Hopefully those following CNN aren't basing their political decisions on Donald Trump. If they are, that's not CNN's fault.
Personally, I enjoy hearing other people's opinions on political issues, whether or not they are celebrities. As Americans we have been granted rights to have are own opinions and criticize our government. American celebrities are included. Although they have the right to have and express their opinions, in my mind a celebrity does not have full control over my decision making, when it comes to politics. After comprehending the specific political issue, I take the information that I have been provided by various outlets such as the media and my peers, and I draw my own conclusions. CNN may interview whomever they wish on political issues, celebrity or not.
Although I appreciate watching the “Apprentice”, once in awhile as well as catch a glimpse of Trump's newest building developments, as I travel to various parts of the world, I do agree with the previous blogger's comment that Trump is not framed as a political expert in this CNN interview. In my opinion, he is showcased as a concerned American, who happens to be a famous business tycoon. I agree with the original blogger's statement, “More people know about The Apprentice and Donald Trump than they do political policies.” But I do not feel that the public sees Trump as a credible source for political information. Trump’s criticism of the current president's administration, I feel has connected him with others that are not in support of the current president's policies in Iraq, and his opinion is as valid as any other person with an opinion.
As stated previously, I do not feel that I rely heavily on celebrity trends. I do believe the American public, due to the inconclusive information the public receives constantly from the media, ultimately the American public are left in a state of confusion. It is not surprising that Trump says in the interview, “I don't know what's going on.” This is the feeling of most Americans not well informed as to America’s involvement in the international community. I do not feel that comments made by Trump in this interview help to answer any questions that the American people have. The American people in my opinion now have an understanding of Trump’s thoughts on current politics. But whether or not other Americans support his claims is up to their own discretion.
At first it kind of bothered me that CNN would choose to do the interview with Trump instead of a politician who actually has political experience. It’s as if they are saying the only way they will get viewers to watch is if they find a celebrity everyone is familiar with because that is the only way to attract attention.
After watching the video though, I think Trumps opinions have some credibility because he claims he does know these politicians and it sounds like he does follow their political paths more than most Americans. He’s honest when he doesn’t know a certain politician and keeps refering to the polls instead of making up any facts. He also doesn’t say who he would vote for so he’s not trying to persuade people to vote for a certain candidate.
I also thought at first maybe younger voters may be likely to base their views from Trumps because of his celebrity influence. But I agree that it is important to talk about political views with others to learn more about different views and issues and I think the interview does just that, offering another opinion.
I don’t think anything was wrong with the way he expressed his opinions, but if I were him I’d think more about his career and the people that may turn against him for expressing his hate toward Bush which many do disagree with.
Although Trump's comments do claim that he does not really know much about politics, by putting him on CNN as a lead story they give him credibility as if he knew what he was talking about. I personally believe that they should leave this to political analysts who will make more valid points that people can actually contemplate. In my opinion I feel that these comments won’t really do anything to help out the current presidential candidates, or discredit the current president's legacy (or what’s left of that).
I agree that he is a concerned citizen and that he has the right to voice his opinion just like any other member of this country, but I feel that stuff like this should be pushed to the back page where it holds less validity. Trump makes for good television, he thinks little before he talks which produces great headlines. CNN is using this as more of a publicity stunt then actual news. I would expect more out of a worldwide news leader.
Out of fairness to Trump, he is entitled his own opinion. It is up to Americans to form their own opinion to. I hate that today its seems as celebrities has such a hold on the way Americans think.
As far as it making headline news, CNN must of not had anything better to run with that day. There needs to be more positive reporting in the world, we are focused on so much negativity.
It really bothers me that Donald Trump thinks he is allowed to put down the Bush Administration the way he did. I believe in respect, and that was disrespectful. Just because he is a celebrity does not mean he can take full advantage of that and say everything on his mind. I am not even just talking about Trump, many other celebrities have taken full advantage of being in the public eye and stating their opinion. I also believe the way he said it is rude, there are ways to say you disagree with how something is done without being so blunt and harsh. I just think overall that is how Trump is as a person and I guess it should be expected.
Celebrities and Politics have forever gone hand in hand, so I did not find it strange at all that CNN interviewed Donald Trump on their show. He is a very opinionated businessman so I'm sure that CNN thought that it was going to be a good interview where they got some really good comments out of him.
I think it can be hard to distinguish because celebrities are so influential in today’s society and they have a huge platform in which they can get their views and opinions out there. I think Trump expressed his feelings on the war and the president, which echoed the feelings of the majority of Americans today. He was able to sound pretty credible and he did have an idea of what he was talking about, so I didn't mind so much the fact that he was expressing his opinions the way that he did. It did bother me a little bit when he said he could have done a better job and that it would be fun and interesting and calling Bush the worst president we have ever seen. He made a lot of judgment calls on people and issues that he really didn't have any credibility commenting on.
Either way, CNN did it because they knew he would make good comments which would lead to good television and good ratings.
Donald Trump is well repected in the real estate world and personally, I don't think that this makes him qualified to make political comments on CNN. Even though, CNN may have thought it was a good idea to have Trump on, in order to boast some ratings, I think it was a poor decision to have a man talk about politics when he clearly is not an expert on the subject. His comments about potential canididates seems more like his personal opinion about the character and style of each person, rather than the issues that are at hand. However, don't get me wrong, I think it is important for celebrities to share their opinions, but I think these opinions should be shared in a less serious political forum.
I certainly think that CNN knew what they were doing by interviewing Trump on his political views. With all the publicity he's gotten in the past with the Rosie O'Donnel fight they knew people would watch the interview for his radical statements.
I think it's fine for celebrities to give their opinions on politics but I think Trump loves the sound of his own voice and likes to stir things up. He calls Bush the worst president in history but admits he doesn't know what's going on. Trump would think running for president would be fun and interesting because he would love the publicity and being even more in the public eye than he already is.
As far as Trump holding too much power and influence in the world of politics, I don't think people's opinions were actually swayed by him. I think people watched it for entertainment and to see what kind of ridiculous comments he could make about any politician. He didn't have facts to back up his statements so I don't think we have a problem of him being too much of an influence on people.
